Mezzo-soprano Rowan Hellier is recognised for her captivating stage presence and psychologically astute interpretations, combining intellect and sensuality with “focus, drama and clarity”. With “richly nuanced vocal power" and a luminous upper extension, Rowan’s current repertoire centres on Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde), Kundry (Parsifal) and Didon (Les Troyens).

On the operatic stage, Rowan has appeared at the Berlin Staatsoper (Die Liebe zu den drei Orangen, Die Zauberflöte, Babylon, Madama Butterfly, Der Kaiser von Atlantis, La Traviata, Sleepless), Grand Théâtre de Genève (Sleepless), Hamburg Staatsoper (Vanitas), Staatstheater Braunschweig (Götterdämmerung, Das Rheingold, Dead Man Walking, Dante, Die Zauberflöte, Sleepless, La Traviata), Welsh National Opera (Le nozze di Figaro), and Royal Ballet and Opera as Frau Grubach / Waschfrau in the world premiere of Philip Glass’s The Trial. She later reprised these roles with Theater Magdeburg for the Romanian premiere of the work. At Salzburg Landestheater, she appeared in productions including Hänsel und Gretel, Orfeo ed Euridice, The Orphic Moment, Carmen, Il turco in Italia, Brokeback Mountain, Idomeneo, and Don Giovanni, under the musical direction of Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla.

As a member of the International Opera Studio at Staatsoper Unter den Linden, under the artistic direction of Daniel Barenboim, Rowan was the recipient of a Liz Mohn Kultur und Musikstiftung scholarship.

Rowan has appeared in concert with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra (Shadows on the Wall – Five Hauntings) at St Magnus International Festival conducted by Alexander Vedernikov, the London Philharmonic Orchestra (Das Rheingold) under Vladimir Jurowski over multiple seasons, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (Carmen title role), Stavanger Symphony Orchestra (Christmas Oratorio) conducted by John Butt, and Seattle Symphony (Mozart Requiem) under Itzhak Perlman.

She has also collaborated with conductor Nicholas Collon at the Bregenz Festival in the orchestral song cycle woman.life.song and with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (Grania and Diarmid), and performed at LSO St Luke’s with conductor André de Ridder (woman.life.song).

Her concert engagements include performances at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Müpa Budapest conducted by Peter Eötvös, Château de Versailles with The King’s Consort, and collaborations with Trevor Pinnock and Friends, including the title role in Dido and Aeneas at Wigmore Hall. She has performed with the Dunedin Consort, most notably as mezzo-soprano soloist on their Gramophone Award-winning recording of Mozart’s Requiem, with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (Giulio Cesare), Ensemble Resonanz in a live broadcast of the Christmas Oratorio in collaboration with Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and Bachfest Leipzig, and made her Shanghai Concert Hall debut with the renowned Kuss Quartet.

Creator and eclectic programme curator of new opera and song-related formats, Rowan’s work often centres women’s stories, blurring boundaries of genre, discipline, and aesthetic to explore new perspectives on classical performance.

Her collaboration with composer Kate Whitley and Ted Hughes Award-winning poet Hollie McNish produced Gorgeous Beasts, commissioned by and premiered at Oxford International Song Festival in 2021. The work was subsequently performed as part of the all-female composer programme wom3n at Wigmore Hall on International Women’s Day 2022.

Baba Yaga: Songs and Dances of Death, a theatrical, interdisciplinary song recital for voice and two female dancers, combining song, movement, and a newly commissioned work by composer Elena Langer, is a co-production between Beethovenfest Bonn and OISF. The next performance of this work is at Beethovenfest Bonn in September 2026.

Her costumed concert concept She Represents, based around the New Women of 1930s Berlin, was featured on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row with Kirsty Wark in autumn 2024. The next performance of She Represents will take place at Wigmore Hall in March 2027.

Further performances in song include recitals for Opéra de Lille, Perth Festival of the Arts, Glasgow Cathedral Festival, performances with The Prince Consort, and multiple appearances at Wigmore Hall. Rowan collaborates regularly with pianists Sholto Kynoch and Jonathan Ware.
